University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwick (UHCW) have transformed their teaching and training facilities with Brandon Medical’s Symposia®.

Symposia® is a medical AV system complete with a wide range of medical grade components to capture audio and video, record it, display it and print it. The interactive system at UHCW includes 8 simulated operating theatres, each supplied with Brandon Medical’s camera systems, monitors and operating theatre lights.

Symposia® connects the staff within UHCW to a range of audio-visual resources which can be accessed from any location. All audio and video communications can be 2-way,providing a fast exchange of audio and video. The medical school has benefited from interactive teaching. Audio-visual from operating theatres can be accessed and distributed over the Hospital’s existing network to seminar rooms, lecture theatres and training rooms. Both students and medical professionals have found the system has significantly improved the quality of teaching at UHCW. Recording data in this way allows accuratefeedback to be given to trainee medics. The simulation theatres provide students with an environment to help shape and master the skills they will need to transfer to real life theatres.

Professor Damian Griffin comments on the systems success:

“The use of modern audio-visual technology has the potential to revolutionise medicalteaching. Here at Warwick Medical School and the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire we have built a Surgical Training Centre including Brandon Medical’s Symposia®. With eight simulated operating theatres, the new Centre provides an interactive experience to train junior surgeons and introduce experts to new techniques. We have already benefited from smart, flexible, easy to use A-V systems that link tutors, students and a seminar audience. Delegates who are not physically present can virtually join from remote locations and we can extend our reach to include tele-mentoring, tele-monitoring, interactive medical lectures, and links to seminars and training rooms. All this will help us to achieve our goal of the best possible training for our students and doctors - all to the benefit of our patients."

The high class training facilities also include the latest HD-LED Operating TheatreLights from Brandon Medical. The lights were chosen for their unique fullspectrum colour rendition and red balance control feature.
