Ministerial Visit for Brandon Medical

The Rt Hon David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science, visited the medical equipment specialists Brandon Medical on Thursday 26th September.

On a mission to understand the Life Sciences eco-system which exists in Leeds between industry, NHS and academia, Mr Willetts was given a first hand glimpse into the design and manufacturing processes in developing world-leading medical lighting and surgical training technologies.

Mr Willetts was greeted by Managing Director brothers Graeme and Adrian Hall at the brand new 50,000 ft² state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Leeds. The Minister was then transported into the world of medical technology, to the company’s audio-visual digital operating room to find our more about high definition and surgical lighting technologies. Brandon Medical’s award winning Quasar and Galaxy HD-LED operating theatre lights use a novel colour transformation technology to produce very high light quality from the LEDs. The light projects the best colour rendition of any operating theatre light available on the market, maximising accuracy during surgical procedures. This reduces eye strain and fatigue enhancing the surgeon’s concentration. The lights are installed in a modern digital OR, set up for the latest keyhole surgery and surgical skills training.

Mr Willetts was also shown the R&D laboratories where all product design and developments are conducted in-house, Brandon’s product training school and their advanced manufacturing facilities.

On meeting the Brandon Medical team, Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said:

“I’ve seen remarkable examples of innovative solutions to complex medical problems today which are not only helping to benefit people's health and improve their quality of life, but also keeping the UK at the front of the global technology race.”

“Leeds is a vibrant location for the medical technologies industry and is playing a vital role in supporting the life sciences sector through the Government's Industrial Strategy."

Graeme Hall commented: “It was a pleasure to explain to the Minister how Brandon Medical is working with the Hospitals and Universities in Leeds to develop new medical technologies that improve healthcare outcomes."
