Active Shadow Management for Surgical Lighting

Maintain illumination as hands and instruments move through the field.

Hands, instruments and members of the surgical team inevitably interrupt a surgical-light beam. Good optical design reduces the effect; active sensing adds another layer by detecting obstruction and changing how the light is delivered.

How Active Shadow Management works

Quasar Qi uses distributed LEDs to maintain illumination around common obstructions. On Qi60, user-configurable Active Shadow Management adds range-finding sensing so the system can respond to conditions beneath the light head and optimise illumination when the field is obstructed.

The workflow benefit

The practical objective is not to claim a shadow-free field. It is to reduce the amount of light lost when hands and instruments enter the beam and to reduce avoidable repositioning of the light during critical moments.

  • More consistent illumination under obstruction.
  • Less frequent manual repositioning.
  • Adjustable behaviour to suit user preference and procedure.

Part of the wider iLite optical platform

Active shadow behaviour works alongside Fat Beam, depth of illumination and the distributed LED architecture. Those features should be considered together when evaluating how the light performs in a real surgical field.

It is a Qi60 feature that uses sensing and distributed illumination to respond to obstructions beneath the light and help maintain useful illumination.

No. Surgical shadows depend on positioning, anatomy, people and instruments. The system is designed to reduce the effect of obstruction, not to promise a shadow-free field.

The current technical-data table specifies this feature on Qi60.

No. Shadow management deals with obstruction of the beam. Depth of illumination describes how useful light is maintained through distance above and below the reference plane.

The iLite optical platform uses distributed LEDs to support reduced shadowing. The active, user-configurable management feature is model-specific.
